A timeline of shameful events on the international stage

The pictures of Hungary fans fighting with riot police at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday night were shocking, albeit not unexpected.

It is far from the first time scenes have turned ugly on the international stage over the past few years, with regular fines dished out to the worst offenders.

Here, Sportsmail takes a look at a timeline of shameful events, from 2019 to now…

  March 25, 2019 – Montenegro v England

Danny Rose, Raheem Sterling and Callum Hudson-Odoi were targeted by groups of home fans.

Sanction: Montenegro fined £16,975 by UEFA for racist abuse and ordered to play one match behind closed doors.

September 7, 2019 – Serbia v Portugal

UEFA charged the Serbian FA with six offences, including racist behaviour, illicit chants and pitch invasions.

Sanction: UEFA ruled Serbia must play their next game behind closed doors and fined the Serbia FA £28,229.

October 14, 2019 – Bulgaria v England

The match came close to being abandoned after two stoppages in play as supporters were warned about racist behaviour, including Nazi salutes and monkey chanting.

Sanction: Bulgaria ordered by UEFA to play next game behind closed doors and fined £63,645.

November 15, 2019 – Romania v Sweden

Match was halted after Sweden striker Alexander Isak was subjected to racist abuse by home supporters.

Sanction: UEFA ruled that there was no racist behaviour.

July 7, 2021 – England v Denmark

England fans booed the Danish national anthem before the Euro 2020 semi-final and set off fireworks. One supporter shone a laser pen at Danish keeper Kasper Schmeichel as he was about to face a penalty.

Sanction: FA fined £25,630.

July 11, 2021 – Italy v England

Euro 2020 final marred by England fans forcing their way into Wembley.

Sanction: Under investigation.

September 2, 2021 – Hungary v England

England players Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham racially abused by Hungary fans.

Sanction: Hungarian Football Federation fined £158,531 and ordered to play one game behind closed doors.

October 12, 2021 – England v Hungary

Hungary fans clash with police at Wembley and fan arrested over racial abuse of steward.

Sanction: Under investigation.

October 12, 2021 – Albania v Poland

Match suspended for more than 20 minutes as home fans threw objects at Poland players.

Sanction: Under investigation.
