Alec bluntly replied: "There were a lot of people who felt it necessary to contribute some comment to the situation, which really didn't help the situation at all.
"If your protocol is you check the gun every time – well good for you, good for you.
"I've probably handled weapons as much as any other actor in films, with an average career, again shooting or being shot by someone.
"In that time, I had a protocol and it never let me down."
Halyna, 42, was fatally wounded after the gun being held by Alec fired a live round when the actor believed the firearm was empty and was "cold", meaning it was safe to be handled.
Director Joel Souza, 48, was also wounded in the incident at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico.
After news of the shooting was initially reported, George, 60, told Marc Maron's WTF podcast that the death was "infuriating" and "insane".
New gun safety measures were brought onto film and TV sets following the deaths actors Jon-Erik Hexum and Brandon Lee, in 1984 and 1993 respectively.
George raged after the shooting: "Maybe they weren’t even using that gun to do target practice, but they had live ammo with dummies… all this s*** we’ve been seeing with all the Alec Baldwin stuff.
“And that is insane. It’s insane. It’s infuriating."
George said that he has "been on sets for 40 years,” and has never heard of some of the safety measures Alec claimed were being used on Rust.

George continued: “First of all, I’ve never heard the term 'cold gun.
“I’ve never heard that term. Literally, they’re just talking about stuff I’ve never heard of. It’s just infuriating.
“Every single time I’m handed a gun on a set – every time – they hand me a gun, I look at it, I open it, I show it to the person I’m pointing it to, we show it to the crew."
George added: “Everyone does it. Everybody knows. Maybe Alec did that, hopefully he did do that.
Alec has said that he has been cooperating with detectives amid a police investigation into the incident.
In a statement that he posted to social media in the days after the fatal incident, Alec expressed his sadness at what happened.
He wrote: "There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours,’ he tweeted at the time.
"I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family.
"My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna."
