Alicia Vikander confirms sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider is ‘not greenlit but script is in the making’

She starred as Lara Croft in the 2018 origin film Tomb Raider.

And Alicia Vikander has reassured fans that a follow-up movie is still in the works despite being derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to Collider.com, the Swedish actress, 32, said she thinks the project will still happen, sharing: ‘It’s not greenlit, but the script is in the making, and I think everyone is excited and I would love to revisit Lara again.’

Vikander’s Tomb Raider grossed nearly $275 million at the box office and in September 2019 it was announced that there would be a sequel slated for a March 2021 release.

In January, Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green signed on to direct the film and, according to Vikander, is still working on the script for the sequel.  

‘She’s working on the script right now. So I’m very excited to sort of read something very soon,’ The Danish Girl Oscar winner explained.

Vikander is currently promoting her fantasy film The Green Knight which is being released on July 30 after its original opening last year was scrapped as a result of the pandemic.

The Green Knight is based on the Arthurian legend detailed in the 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and co-stars Dev Patel and Joel Edgerton.

Meanwhile, another of her films premiered at Cannes last week to rave reviews.

Blue Bayou follows a New Orleans–based tattoo artist who, despite living in the U.S. since being adopted from Korea when he was three-years-old, faces deportation following an unrelated, minor arrest.

Vikander plays the main character’s wife opposite leading man Justin Chon who also wrote and directed the drama.

Blue Bayou is set to be released in the US in September.
