Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey ‘set to MISS start of the season’ after picking up an ankle injury

Thomas Partey will reportedly miss the start of Arsenal’s season after picking up an ankle injury at the weekend.

The Ghanian was on the end of a strong challenge from Ruben Loftus-Cheek during the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat by Chelsea in their Mind Series pre-season friendly on Sunday.

Partey was forced off in the 39th minute where he received treatment on his ankle but ESPN are now reporting that he will see a specialist later this week and the £45million star is expected to be out for a few weeks.

After the match, Arteta told reporters: ‘I just had a talk with the doc. He’ll have a scan tomorrow.

‘At the moment it’s not looking good because he was in pain and could not continue.’

It’s more frustration for Partey, who also missed a large part of last season following his high-profile move from Atletico Madrid.

However, while Partey’s absence will be a huge blow for Arteta, the Spaniard can rely on Xhaka to step in for the Ghanian after his summer move to Italy fell through.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a move to Roma, now managed by Jose Mourinho, just a few weeks ago.

He received treatment on the pitch for quite some time before being replaced by Granit Xhaka

But with the switch falling through, Arteta confirmed that the Swiss midfielder remains a key part of his plans.

Arteta told talkSPORT: ‘Granit is going to stay with us. He is a key member of our squad.’

Arsenal play one final friendly against north London rivals Tottenham on August 8 before their Premier League campaign gets underway against newly-promoted Brentford at the Brentford Community Stadium.
