Romelu Lukaku came back to Stamford Bridge this summer with a point to prove and he has already done more than that.

.

Chelsea signed the Belgium international for a club-record £97m – which raised eyebrows.

But he is already going some way to paying back that fee with three goals already in his Blues career and no sign of slowing down.

From his debut against Arsenal to his brace at the weekend facing Aston Villa, Lukaku has proved a handful for defenders – scoring three in three so far.

One man that has never doubted the striker is Chelsea legend Ashley Cole, who believed that the former Manchester United star would return and lead the Blues to glory.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror after Lukaku had just returned to west London, Cole said: "We are seeing the more mature Lukaku and seeing the quality that we all knew.

"But sometimes you have to go away and come back and put yourself through those challenges to reach your full potential. Hopefully, we see that back at Chelsea.

"He can bring leadership, a big quality that is needed.

"There are a lot of young players in the squad so for him to come in after the great season that he had.

"There have question marks over him at certain clubs he has been but his time at Inter, you are now seeing a player full of confidence and willing to lead and win lots of trophies."

Chelsea have certainly benefitted from Lukaku's prowess in front of goal when they came through a tricky match against Villa to win 3-0.

Last season, there were countless matches where they failed to convert their chances but all the Belgian needed was two sniffs of goal – scoring them both.

Thomas Tuchel has a great squad, brimming with talent in every position.

The defence is solid, the midfield is creative but the question marks were over his attacking department but Lukaku appears to have solved that problem.

Cole added: "Not just his goalscoring but his all-round game has improved and it has been something that Chelsea has lacked, that cutting edge, finishing of chances.

"Hopefully, he is the last piece of the puzzle and he can be a huge asset.

"The maturity he has shown and the growth over that 10-year period since he first came to Chelsea has been immense.

"Not only is he a good player, he is a leader. He is a leader for Belgium, he is their all-time top goalscorer which is tough to do. He’s been playing at the highest level now so yeah, he is a great addition to the team."
