BBC News presenter Huw Edwards couldn't resist ribbing Piers Morgan today as the former GMB star's ego inflated to new heights after his award win.

.

Piers, 56, won his first award for TV presenting this evening since storming off GMB in the wake of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's documentary.

The controversial TV star – who recently lost out at the NTAs to Geordie TV duo Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnely – was awarded the News Presenter award, beating former co-star Susanna Reid and BBC newsreader Huw.

Ahead of winning the gong, Piers shared photos of himself with both Susanna and Huw, the latter of whom he comically shook a fist in front of.

He tweeted: "You’re going down Boyo.. ⁦@thehuwedwards #tricawards ⁦@TRICawards."

Later, Piers shared a picture of himself grinning with the award and wrote: "Victory!"

But Huw retweeted the picture of them together and joked: "I stormed out so he won by default Flag of Wales #congratulations @TRICawards @susannareid100."

Piers didn't take the comment too much to heart and replied with three crying laughing emojis.

Susanna retweeted Huw's comment and later paid tribute to co-star Kate Garraway, who was gifted with the Special Award of the night.

Sharing a sweet selfie of them both, she tweeted: "TRIC Special Award goes to the inspirational @kategarraway. Love you Kate."

Susanna and Piers reunited tonight for an event for the first time since he quit in March.

It's been an explosive year for Piers, which saw him storm out of the GMB studio following an on-air row with weatherman Alex Beresford.

The day before, Piers had laid into Meghan Markle over her infamous Oprah Winfrey interview with Prince Harry, in which she spoke about experiencing suicidal thoughts and accused a senior royal of racism.

The host declared that he didn't believe the Duchess of Sussex, leading to a ferocious Twitter spat between himself and colleague Alex.

Piers invited Alex onto the programme, but ended up losing his temper and walking off. He eventually cooled down and returned to set, but later had a meeting with ITV bosses in which he was told he had to apologise for his comments.

After refusing to do so, Piers quit the ITV show.

Piers invited Susanna on stage to share his win this evening – which she was also nominated for – crediting the “remarkable” team that put the breakfast show together during the pandemic.

“He can start an argument in an empty room,” Susanna laughed on stage. “I’ve never known anyone get so worked up over a sausage roll.”

Piers said the pair developed “close bonds” during the pandemic, adding: “It felt it was right to share with Susanna.

“I haven’t seen Susanna since I left so it was very emotional. You get very close to someone when you work that closely together

“Not many men have seen Susanna Reid at 5am in her curlers.”
