Charli XCX, Rita Ora and Ed Sheeran lead British stars at MTV VMAs

British stars were out to fly the UK flag at Sunday evening’s MTV Video Music Awards at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in sensational style.

Charli XCX, Rita Ora and Ed Sheeran were all making statements on the red carpet as they arrived at the star-studded event in sensational style, with each rocking headline hitting looks.

The Fancy songstress, 29, left little to the imagination in a lingerie-inspired ensemble while Rita, 30, wowed in an all-black look with a Medusa-style headdress and Ed, also 30, wore a Versace blazer in the brand’s Baroque print.

Charli, real name Charlotte Emma Aitchison, pulled out all the stops for the evening’s look as she sported a tattered mesh mini over her lingerie.

She teased her tresses into a voluminous sex kitten-inspired beehive style with dramatic Sixties eye make-up and a pale lip to perfect her flawless red carpet style.

Rita looked stunning in an ab-flashing Vera Wang bodysuit with a cape and gloves.

Her blonde locks were topped with a dramatic headdress which seemed to be inspired by Medusa’s snakes and added a further wow to the look.

Show-stopping: The 29-year-old popstar was bound to turn heads as she rocked the red carpet

She opted for maximum bling as she rocked tooth jewellery in the form of a dazzling grill, which she playfully flashed at photographers.

Ed was stylish in Versace, as he rocked the brand’s trademark look following a slew of recent appearance in clothes from the fashion giant.

The hitmaker walked the red carpet with his protegé Maisie Peters. He took to the stage for an acoustic performance of his song Shivers having been introduced by his long-time pal Rita.

Drama: Rita looked stunning in an ab-flashing Vera Wang bodysuit with a cape and gloves

Daring: The R.I.P hitmaker also sported a pair of black shorts while she added height to her frame with daring thigh-high platform boots

Wild: If that wasn’t enough, Rita added to her wild outfit with gold grills on her teeth – including a diamond-encrusted ‘R’

Yay! Rita was seen fondly greeting Billy Porter in excited style

Anticipation: Rita looked amazing while heading to the event earlier in the night

Charli also took to the stage later in the evening as she introduced Camila Cabelo to stage in sensational style, having changed into a chic red dress.

Joining the UK contingent and flying the flag for the Emerald Isle was Irish sportsman Conor McGregor.

Rocker Machine Gun Kelly got into an altercation with Conor as it all went down as they were both posing for photographers on the red carpet with their respective partners by their sides just before the start of the show.

Kelly’s movie star girlfriend Megan Fox was among the people who stepped in between the two would-be fighters, and then wrapped her arms around the singer-rapper as the couple were led off past the growing crowd that had gathered.

It turns out McGregor asked MGK (born Colson Baker) for a photo, but the Bloody Valentine star shot him down, which didn’t go over too well with the former UFC champion, according to TMZ.

Words were exchanged and the situation escalated to the point where Kelly pushed McGregor, who then stumbled back and spilled his drink.

The Irish fighter is currently walking with a cane as he recovers from a broken tibia bone that he suffered in his last bout with Dustin Poirier on July 10 at UFC 264.

The 2021 MTV VMAs tried to kick off the pandemic-era ratings slump with fiery performances from pop icon Justin Bieber and rising sensation Olivia Rodrigo.

But before the performances got underway, Madonna made an appearance referencing the start of her legendary career and her move to New York City while removing a trench coat to reveal an edgy black leather outfit.

The annual event was held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, marking the first time in eight years that the venue has hosted the show.

Justin was a fitting star to open the show, as he leads the list of nominees with seven nominations, including top honor video of the year and best direction for POPSTAR, artist of the year, best cinematography for Holy and best pop song, best editing and best collaboration for Peaches.

Heated: Words were exchanged and the situation escalated to the point where Kelly pushed McGregor, who then stumbled back and spilled his drink

Right back at you: After collecting himself for a brief moment, McGregor threw what was left of his drink at Kelly, which was also in the vicinity of Fox

Strong start: Justin Bieber and the Kid Laroi kicked off the 2021 MTV VMAs with Stay and Ghost, before Olivia Rodrigo gave a rough and raw performance of Good 4 U
