‘In school, with your top off, being fat, you don’t want to go swimming. Swimming was a big no-no.

‘Then I realised that I was going to have to do it for this show, so I had some swimming lessons before The Games’ swimming lessons started. I could do a doggy paddle, but I couldn’t swim a length, so we progressed from there.’

In an earlier VT viewers saw how Colson got on in training and how he was nervous to do pool events after being called ‘the fat kid at school’ when he was in his trunks.

The soap star, who plays Craig Tinker on Coronation Street, said: ‘Only learnt to swim five weeks ago. I was the fat kid at school so I didn’t want to get in the pool.

‘Then I got addicted to running and I lost weight. So I want to show that I have no limits now and try and do it in less then a minute.’

He also previously admitted he used to go running in disguise and only at night as he was too ’embarrassed’ over his size.

‘Every run until at least May was for the benefit of losing weight, but then something clicked and it wasn’t about that any more. I became more interested in what running actually was,’ he said.

‘My first runs were in the witching hour, pitch black, I had a snood and a cap on. I did not want to be seen.

‘But then you see other people who look like you, who are in the same position as you, and the inhibitions start to run off. Running does give you confidence.

‘You’re not doing it for anyone else, and no one else is going to do it for you. Once you have that idea in your head, you’re on to a winner.’
