Cristiano Ronaldo's mother was pictured crying tears of joy at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon after her son scored two against Newcastle on his second Manchester United debut.

The four-time Ballon D'or winner put United in front on the stroke of half time, before bagging his second just after the hour mark – restoring United's lead after the Magpies had equalised and prompting emotional scenes in the crowd from mother Dolores Aveiro.

Her appearance at the game came as a surprise to many, given it has been widely reported that Ronaldo has banned his mother from attending due to the fact she gets too nervous and has fainted at his games twice.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Ronaldo explained his decision: "She's not allowed now to watch big games, I say, 'Listen, I don't have a father any more. I don't want to lose my mum, too, so you're not going to watch the quarter finals, semi-finals, or finals.

"She gets so nervous, I don’t understand why. She is not allowed now to watch big games. I get friends to stay with her and she goes for walks around the house. She fainted two times in the stadium."

However, her overriding emotion on Saturday was clearly joy as her son put his side in the lead, proving he is still every inch the elite talent to the few who doubted whether he could hit the heights he achieved in his first stints at the club.

Ronaldo's second came at a crucial time, just as the visitors were beginning to mount some momentum – his low left-footed drive going through the legs of Magpies shot-stopper Freddie Woodman and into the back of the net.

Old Trafford erupted as the former Real Madrid and Juventus man wheeled away in celebration – performing his trademark "SIUUUU" celebration to the delight of the Stretford End faithful.

Following the game, Ronaldo heaped praise on the United fans for their support.

"I belong to this club, so I want to help the team to achieve good things and I’m looking forward to the next games."
