Don McLean congratulates Taylor Swift for breaking American Pie’s record for the longest hit

Don McLean took to Twitter on Tuesday to congratulate Taylor Swift after she broke a record he had held for almost 50 years with American Pie with her new song All Too Well (Taylor’s Version).

Swift’s All Too Well (Taylor’s Version), which spans 10:13 minutes, earlier this week dethroned McLean’s hit (8:42 minutes) for the longest song to hit the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. 

‘Let’s face it, nobody ever wants to lose that #1 spot, but if I had to lose it to somebody, I sure am glad it was another great singer/songwriter such as Taylor,’ the 76-year-old singer-songwriter said. ‘Congratulations @taylorswift13!’

American Pie had held the record since it hit number one in January of 1972.

The New Rochelle, New York-born performer said in a statement to Billboard: ‘There is something to be said for a great song that has staying power.

Swift, 31, released All Too Well (Taylor’s Version) November 12 from her newest album Red (Taylor’s Version). Swift performed All Too Well (Taylor’s Version) on SNL earlier this month and released a short film for the song featuring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien.

Swift’s Red (Taylor’s Version) album has debuted to equal success, landing in the top spot on the Billboard 200.
