The pair travelled to a rooftop five-a-side pitch to learn the sex of their baby, where Van de Beek was handed a football containing coloured smoke, with blue denoting a boy and pink denoting a girl.

The former Ajax star drop-kicked the ball and it burst into a puff of pink, and he then embraced Estelle in touching pictures shared on both of their Instagram accounts.

Ian Wright, Bergkamp's former Arsenal teammate, was among those to send well wishes to the couple and commented seven love hearts on Estelle's post.

The uplifting gender reveal capped a brilliant few days for Van de Beek, who appears to have been welcomed in from the cold after a frustrating spell at his club.

He was frequently passed over for game time by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and made just two starts in all competitions under the Norwegian this season.

However, Solskjaer's sacking on Sunday could pave the way for Van de Beek to play a more-prominent role in the months to come, with Ralf Rangnick set to take over as interim manager.

He came off the bench at half-time against Watford last weekend in what proved to be Solskjaer's final game in charge and scored his first goal of the season to give United hope of a comeback, although they fell to a 4-1 defeat at Vicarage Road.

With Carrick appointed Solskjaer's successor on a temporary basis, Van de Beek was handed a rare Champions League start as the Red Devils won 2-0 at Villarreal in midweek.

He will hope for more involvement as United travel to Chelsea on Sunday evening for a tricky encounter with the Premier League leaders.
