"I have known Eden for a long time and know that his dream was to play for Real Madrid," Courtois told Reuters. "It's a shame it hasn't worked out yet as everyone would like it to.

"I can see that he has got the desire, joy and he wants to help the team. He is looking to improve. It's not easy to take back your best form when you haven't played for the last two and a half years.

"He has showed in his entire career he is one of the best players in the world. He hasn't been able to show it lately.

"But that talent is not gone and I am sure he will get back, so we cannot kill him believing he is an average player because he is not."

Hazard has been linked with a move back to England in recent months, with rumours suggesting mega-rich Newcastle are interested in his services.

The player has always maintained his desire to be a success in the Spanish capital, dismissing transfer speculation in May.

"I don't see myself outside of Madrid," said Hazard. "I have a three-year contract and when I am 100 per cent I will contribute a lot to the team… I will do great things for Real Madrid."

Real are currently one point clear at the top of La Liga, with a game in hand on David Silva's Real Sociedad in second.

The capital club are also doing well in the Champions League and can qualify for the knock-out stages of the tournament with a victory against Moldovan outfit Sheriff Tiraspol on Wednesday.

Hazard will be keen to play a crucial role in both campaigns and his manager Carlo Ancelotti still has faith in him, although he needs to prove himself if he wants to be a regular.

"The problem [Hazard] has right now is he has a coach who prefers another player," said Ancelotti in October.

"That can happen in a squad like Real Madrid's. What's important is the player has the motivation to work to play. He is doing that.

"Little by little he is getting back to his best version. I'm convinced that this season he will get to his best and will play more than he is playing now."
