Gabrielle Union encapsulates elegance in a stunning Iris Van Herpen gown at the 2021 Met Gala

Gabrielle Union has long been a Met Gala favorite for her unique looks, continuing the tradition this year with a stunning ensemble.

The 48-year-old actress stepped out in a stunning Iris Van Herpen gown for the annual bash at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

She also paid tribute to one of her idols, Cicely Tyson, with a dress designed by Samantha Black that pays tribute to Tyson’s 1974 Emmys look.

Union stepped out at the gala in a stunning Iris Van Herpen gown, an elaborate design which the actress praised on Instagram.

‘This work of art changes with every step. It’s what this dress embodies. For me, what’s needed in fashion and in life is change and evolution,’ Union said.

The actress was styled by Thomas Christos Kikis and she also stepped out wearing Jimmy Choo pumps, with makeup by Fiona Stiles and stylish rings and necklaces by Messika Paris.

Designer Iris Van Herpen also took to Instagram, explaining that the gown was created from, ‘thousands of spheres’ that are cut and layered, ‘in size gradients from a translucent white ‘liquid’ fabric and lasercut with a fine silver outline.’

These pieces are then, ‘handstitched seamlessly in a multilevel optical illusion from which waves seem to float down weightlessly.’

The designer added that this custom piece will be auctioned off by Sotheby’s with all of the proceeds fully donated to the Amazon Conservation Association and the Rainforest Trust.

Union also spoke with Entertainment Tonight, revealing that the one-of-a-kind gown took over 1,400 hours to create.

‘We’ve been working on this since April, and it’s all about change. Every step it changes…all the colors change, just like America,’ Union said.

Before she stepped out at the gala, Union also took Monday afternoon to pay homage to Cicely Tyson, and what she called her ‘favorite red carpet look of all time.’

‘My tribute to an American Icon. I wanted to honor Ms. Cicely Tyson and the dress she wore to the 1974 Emmys (one of my favorite red carpet looks of all time) by asking one of my favorite designers to create this dress as an homage to Ms Tyson,’ Union began.
