Gael Garcia Bernal rocks a blonde look at the red carpet premiere of Old

Gael Garcia Bernal rocked a rather surprising look at the red carpet premiere of his new movie Old, sporting a head of blonde hair.

The 42-year-old actor was all smiles on the red carpet for his new movie from director M. Night Shyamalan, which held its premiere at Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Bernal’s blonde locks are most likely in preparation for his portrayal of gay professional wrestler Saul Armendariz, who created a popular ‘exotico’ character named Classico, known as ‘The Liberace of Lucha Libre.’

Bernal signed on to play Cassandro almost exactly a year ago, with Emmy and Oscar-winning director Roger Ross Williams making his narrative feature directing debut.

The movie will follow the true story of Saul Armendariz, an El Paso, Texas native who began training in Mexican lucha libre wrestling when he was just 15.

He created the ‘exotico’ (male wrestlers dressed in drag portraying gay characters) character Cassandro, whose rise to fame took the wrestling world by storm.

While most exotico wrestlers were straight, Armendariz is openly gay, with Cassandro being the first exotico character to win the Ultimate Wrestling Alliance (UWA) championship in 1992.

While it’s unclear when production may start on Cassandro, Bernal dying his hair blonde could indicate cameras will roll sooner rather than later.

Bernal also has a number of other projects in various stages of production, including The Playboy Interview, where he plays Salvador Dali.
