Laura Tobin couldn’t hide her emotions during a live broadcast from the Arctic as she recalled her daughter’s poignant message about climate change.

The meteorologist was reporting live from Svalbard, halfway between Norway and the North Pole, for Good Morning Britain on Tuesday to highlight the drastic action needed to halt global warming.

Svalbard was once renowned for its expansive glaciers and abundance of polar bears, but it’s now a sparse landscape due to temperatures rising by 7.7 degrees since 1970.

Explaining the desperate situation, Laura told GMB viewers: ‘We’ve come here because the South Pole’s warming more than anywhere else on Earth and the impacts around the world are huge. We need ice because it helps to cool our planet.

‘The weather here and the fact the ice is melting disrupts the jet stream, it changes the weather in the UK, the ice melting, the glacier melt leads to sea level rise, which will lead to more flooding in the UK.

‘Here the visions of the changing landscape and the impact it’s had on ecosystems and wildlife before our eyes have been inspiring, breathtaking and devastating and I’ve been away from Charlotte for six days.’

The 39-year-old then became emotional and tried to fight back tears as she revealed the personal aspect about the trip, saying: ‘My producer Ruth hasn’t seen her daughter, she’s never had a night away from her and I wanted to come and tell the story of the people here because it’s not actually a story, it’s a reality.’

She then held up a drawing and said: ‘My little Charlotte drew this photo of the polar bear and she asked me to give it to the polar bear.

‘I’m obviously not because that’s very dangerous. If I were to come here when she’s my age, there potentially won’t be polar bears in Svalbard.

‘We were talking about what we can do but just understanding the reality and everyone making a difference and everyone working together and not pointing fingers will help.’

She added half tearful and half laughing: ‘So I hope you’ve enjoyed what we’ve done because I’ve loved it even though I’m crying.’

Back in the studio, presenter Susanna Reid consoled her colleague and said: ‘You know what you said earlier, you said sometimes people go to that particular location for a couple of days and end up staying for a couple of years because they’re so compelled by what they see and the work they need to do.

‘I know that Charlotte means you’re gonna come back because otherwise Laura, we’d be at risk of you staying there for a long time because it’s such important work.

‘She knows why I’ve come here, she said “the ice is melting”, I said why? She said “because we’re driving our cars to the shops”. I want her to know that we did everything we could to make this landscape stay the same for her.’

Laura shares five-year-old daughter Charlotte with husband Dean Brown. Last week, she revealed that the little one had her first day at school and why it was particularly momentous for the family as Charlotte was born prematurely.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
