I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! star Richard Madeley thought he was going to die when he was a child after getting tuberculosis.
The Good Morning Britain presenter departed the series – which was filmed at Gwrych Castle – after falling ill overnight and recently said it was a 'Covid situation'.
He had reassured fans that he felt 'fit as a fiddle' after being taken to the hospital but was 'gutted' he couldn't return.
Meanwhile, Richard has revealed he once asked his mother if he was going to die when he was only five years old.
"I had pneumonia when I was five and nearly died," he said. "The reason I remember this so clearly was that my mother brought my bed downstairs to the living room, and the custom then was this only ever happened one step before death."
He couldn't sit up properly when he was ill and had to drink from a 'thin spout'.
Richard added to The Sun : "One day, very alarmed, I said to my mother, ‘Mummy, am I going to die?’. This must have been on my birthday because I remember mum had a cake with candles on it, and I was too weak to blow them out."
Richard left I'm A Celeb
He was severely ill when he was five
He previously opened up about the illness he had in Richard and Judy, where he explained how a scan he had showed some scarring which indicated what he had was probably tuberculosis.
TB is a bacterial infection that mainly affects the lungs, but can also affect the abdomen, glands, bones and nervous system.
Richard was rushed to the hospital in the early hours of Thursday after recently beginning the trials of I'm A Celeb.
The 65-year-old presenter explained his shock exit from the ITV show, saying: “I just had a funny little turn.
“ITV are so good with duty of care and were adamant they had to make sure I was OK. I was given really thorough checks and had a completely clean bill of health.
“No matter what you might have read, I’m absolutely fine. It’s a Covid situation – if it wasn’t for that I’d be back there eating rice and beans.”

As he left the castle to go to the hospital, it meant he broke the channel's strict Covid bubble policy so he had to leave the series.
He added: “I woke feeling disconnected and confused. I was carted off to the local hospital for tests which were impressively thorough, even though by the time I arrived I was feeling fine again.
"But even though doctors gave me a 100% clean bill of health, my time in the castle was over. Once out of the bubble, you can’t go back just in case you bring the bug in with you. If the other campmates got infected, it would be curtains for the show.
“So here I am, back at home, and wondering what might have been. Could I have won it? Might I have been crowned king of the castle? Thanks to Covid, I’ll never know."
