Over the years Marty Whelan has become one of the most instantly recognisable faces and voices in Irish media.

He has graced our screens and the airways in many ways and has an impressive CV which includes presenting Open House, the Rose of Tralee, Winning Streak and his popular Marty In The Morning breakfast show on Lyric FM.

He has been RTE’s official commentator for the Eurovision song contest over the last two decades and clearly has a passion for the role.

After heartbreak for Brooke Scullion viewers of the contest were concerned for Marty as his disappointment was clear through the microphone.

Marty Whelan's family life

Born in Dublin in 1956, Whelan was an only child.

He spent five years working with an insurance company before he made his first steps into radio with the pirate station Radio Dublin.

Marty met his wife, Maria, back in 1974 at The Grove disco in Clontarf, what followed was ten years of dating until they walked down the aisle on August 13 1985 in the Church of the Holy Child, Whitehall.

Following tying the knot Maria gave up her career as an air hostess with Aer Lingus.

Speaking to RSVP Live about his marriage Marty said: "My wife is still very fond of me, apparently, and we are still in love."

The couple has two children, Jessica and Thomas.

The two of them often accompany their father to red carpet events. Jessica is a primary school teacher while Thomas recently made a career switch much like his father back in the day, from working in event management to studying law.

Marty said they had no fallings out.

The third member of the Whelan family is their much-loved dog, Alfie.

Marty shared a picture of the pooch on Twitter back in January to celebrate his fifth birthday.

He may have turned 65 last year but said at the time that he had no plans to step away from the spotlight just yet, he can’t afford to.

He said: “I can’t afford to retire, I haven’t a penny to my name. I don’t want to stop, and from a financial point of view, I’d rather keep going.”

“The bottom line here is it’s for your head – and my head tells me I need to keep going.”
