Isaiah Firebrace petitions Parliament to have Aboriginal history classes implemented in schools

Isaiah Firebrace is travelling to Canberra to present his petition to Parliament to have Aboriginal history classes implemented into Australian schools. 

In a post shared to Instagram on Monday, the 22-year-old singer said it was ‘super exciting’ and urged fans to ‘sign and share’ his petition.   

‘Hey guys!! I’m heading to Canberra tomorrow to officially present my change.org petition to parliament. Wow crazy!!’ he began.

He also shared a photo of himself and a friend at the airport in a separate post on Instagram Stories on Tuesday, simply captioning it: ‘Canberra’. 

According to his petition on change.org, Isaiah aims to ‘make Aboriginal History compulsory as a part of the school curriculum’.

‘We need the true history of Australia and its First Nations people being taught in Aussie schools,’ began the More Than Me singer. 

‘Not only to keep the culture alive but provide better understanding, recognition, relationships, and respect to Australia’s First Nations people.’

He added: ‘I am a proud Yorta Yorta and Gunditjmara man… Educating our country on our culture gives First Nations people value and the respect we deserve and will help us to come together.’

At the time of publication, the petition had 289,574 signatures, but Isaiah said he hopes to reach 300,000 by the time it’s presented to Parliament.

‘I am presenting this petition at Parliament House in November and would love for as many people as possible to support this petition,’ he wrote. 

‘Let’s see if we can get this over 300,000 by the day I present this.’

In an interview with the Herald Sun in July, Isaiah said he’d been inspired by last year’s Black Lives Matter protests.   

‘Education is the key and the sooner we can make Aboriginal history a must in curriculums across Australia in primary and secondary schools the better!’ he said.

‘Kids are the key and I know and believe that they are the most important part of change – so let’s teach them about our history – the good and the bad.’
