You can stick a fork in them now, they are done. The defending champions are heading out. Nicolas Pepe collects a forward pass before jinking into the penalty box, dummying his marker with a drop of the shoulder and then curling in a placed effort beyond the keeper. Game over.

Ivory Coast 2-0 Algeria

Goodness me, the state of Algeria right now. They look a total rabble as Serge Aurier fires just wide for Ivory Coast from just outside the box, before moments later Nicolas Pepe sees a strike crucially blocked.

We are back underway for the SECOND HALVES

Algeria must score at least three times or the defending champions are going home very, very early.

Here is a quick recap of how the group stands

Ivory Coast will be through as group winners, albeit setting up a rather trick clash with Egypt in the last-16. Equatorial Guniea will join them and face the winners of Group F, which we will find out soon enough of whether that is Gambia, Mali or Tunisia.

Sierra Leone though will be out as they are currently the second worst team third place – giving Comoros a path into the last-16. Oh yes, there is a fifth team sweating on the results of these games!

HALF-TIME: Ivory Coast 2-0 Algeria

HALF-TIME: Sierra Leone 0-1 Equatorial Guinea

And just as Guinea were celebrating, Serge Aurier was supplying a superb free-kick of his own with a lofted 40-yard ball to the back post where Ibrahim Sangare thrusts a powerful header home. Algeria’s staff and players look shell shocked.

Well, well, well. No playing for a draw here! Brilliant set-piece this as Jose Machin plays a short free-kick square just outside the box, allowing for Pablo Ganet to curl home an excellent strike. As it stands Sierra Leone would now be out along with Algeria, speaking of which…

Ivory Coast celebrate scoring the opening goal against Algeria

Sierra Leone 0-0 Equatorial Guinea

That goal for Ivory Coast is of course excellent news for both of these teams, who will both progress with a draw. Although, in the next round for the likely third placed team in this group is I believe Cameroon, while the runners-up could face Gambia, Mali or even Tunisia.

Even with Tunisia as a factor, there is incentive to avoid Cameroon.

And the defending champions are in huge trouble now in a game they simply must win! It’s lovely build up play from Ivory Coast with one-touch passing in the box resulting in Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe cutting back for AC Milan’s Franck Kessie to slot home.

Ivory Coast 0-0 Algeria

Just to put the state of play in context. As it stands in the group. Ivory Coast progress as group winners, while Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone progress as runners-up and a best third place respectively. Big hitters and defending champions Algeria would be out in a huge shock.

Ivory Coast 0-0 Algeria

Deli is really treading on eggshells now. Just seconds later his arm is out again to fend off a challenge from Youcef Belaili, who in going to ground after being pushed in the face makes as much of it as he can, and to be honest it’s not fooling anyone.

Would have been soft had it been a second yellow card but Deli is really going to have to stay out of trouble for the next 75 minutes.

Ivory Coast 0-0 Algeria

A bit scrappy in both games thus far. Simon Deli is booked for a high arm when launching an aerial challenge alongside Baghdad Bounedjah, while the afters from that see Serge Aurier booked for dissent.

Sierra Leone 0-0 Equatorial Guinea

It’s like watching the Champions League… well at least the 2019 final. In just the first few seconds, a cross from a Guinea attacker strikes Kwame Quee on the arm – albeit accidently.

Guinea are screaming over a penalty but there is no intent from the Sierra Leona defender and only a corner is given.

KICK-OFF: Away we go in the Group E finale

Ivory Coast's defender Ghislain Konan (centre) fights for the ball in the early stages

Here is how the group stands heading into the games

Yes, games with a plural,  because Sierra Leone are also in action against Equatorial Guinea.

Ivory Coast need a win to cement top spot while Guinea need just a draw to ensure progression. Sierra Leone could progress with a draw but only if Ivory Coast avoid defeat by Algeria, who with just one point will still qualify if they win.

To make the ‘best third place’ factor easy to understand. Three points and a goal difference greater than -2 will be enough to progress to the last-16

It’s like an old school international group stage!

You remember the ones like the existing World Cup (and soon to be changed) format and the old Euros. Where at least the two teams playing now have an idea of their future fate ends up after 90 minutes.

Well, sort of anyway. It’s the nuts and bolts that really matter so good afternoon as I welcome to Ivory Coast’s clash with Algeria, where if the latter do not win they are out. None of this waiting around for best third place nonsense regarding this one…

Riyad Mahrez will hope his Algeria side can reach the last-16 of the Africa Cup of Nations

It’s crunch time for Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations as they take on Ivory Coast in a must win encounter to progress to the last-16 of the tournament.

Riyad Mahrez and Co know that three points will secure them a place in the knockout stages along with Ivory Coast who have already qualified.
