Sancho's struggles since leaving Dortmund have not gone unnoticed on the continent and he was mocked ruthlessly in a Sky Sport Germany graphic following the heavy defeat by Liverpool.

The broadcaster portrayed the player as James Bond in a suit and bow tie and wrote, "They call me 007" – referencing Sancho's tally of zero goals and zero assists in seven Premier League appearances.

While Sancho was included in the Three Lions squad for October's World Cup qualifiers, manager Gareth Southgate admitted to serious concerns over his form.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hit back by highlighting Sancho's performance in the 2-1 victory over Villarreal in the Champions League, during which he played 75 minutes.

"Jadon was exceptional, he was electric. The crowd loved him and I think he felt that connection," said Solskjaer.

"He was direct, positive, he went past the full-back numerous times. Yes, he's not scored yet but I thought, 'that's Jadon and we're going to see lots of that'.

"Gareth has also said it's important that Jadon knows (England) believe in him and are invested in him."

Sancho has started just two of United's last six games in all competitions, most recently the 4-2 defeat by Leicester City earlier this month.

Solskjaer appears to favour Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford on the flanks, with the latter recently recovering from shoulder surgery to increase the competition for minutes in the United attack.

The Red Devils are next in action against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening and have a full week to prepare for the top-flight clash due to their elimination from the Carabao Cup at the hands of West Ham United last month.
