Jennifer Connelly talks working with Tom Cruise on Top Gun 2 – and how she overcame her flying fear

Her latest role will see her play Tom Cruise’s love interest in Top Gun 2. 

And Hollywood star Jennifer Connelly has revealed what it was like to join forces with one of the world’s highest paid actors, who portrays pilot Maverick in the drama films.   

Telling all to Amazing Magazine, the 50-year-old actress praised Tom, 59, for his ‘exuberance and his generosity.’

She also said of the box office sensation: ‘The depth and breadth of his involvement, and commitment to what he’s doing, I find extraordinary. Really remarkable. It manifests in everything that I saw him do.

‘He struck me as someone who doesn’t take anything for granted and who seizes every opportunity. I think that’s extraordinary.’

Jennifer, who described her character Penny Benjamin as ‘optimistic’, also divulged during the interview that she overcame her fear of flying prior to filming, even though she wasn’t initially slated for scenes where they took to the skies.

However, during a scene where she and Tom were supposed to taxi along a runway in a North American P-51 Mustang, Penny and Maverick travelled by air.  

The Once Upon A Time In America star said that she had conveniently ‘worked her way out of that chapter’ (her flying phobia) – and she knew she had to ‘get to the bottom of it’ due to constant travel required for work. 

She interestingly added that none of it was linked back to airplanes or air travel – which allowed her to ‘come out the other side.’

The second instalment of Top Gun was originally scheduled for release on July 12 2019.

It was postponed to ‘allow the production to work out all the complex flight sequences’ – and the COVID-19 pandemic added further spanner in the works. Along with scheduling conflicts, the film received even further delays.
