Jesy Nelson is said to be ‘saddened’ over reports that former Little Mix bandmate Leigh-Anne Pinnock allegedly asked a fan to make a video about her accusing her of blackfishing.

.

A storm of controversy has surrounded 30-year-old Jesy since the release of her debut solo single, Boyz, and it’s music video.

A backlash was ignited when some fans accused Jesy of blackfishing – the accusation of appropriating black culture – through her music as they questioned the tone of her singing voice, the degree of fake tan she used on her skin, her use of braided hair, as well as visual cues such as lowrider cars that were popular in rap music videos in the early 2000s.

The backlash has intensified after a social media user who goes by the name No Hun claimed he had received direct messages from 30-year-old Leigh-Anne where she allegedly said Jesy had blocked her and the other Little Mix stars on social media, and she allegedly asked him to: “do a video about [Jesy] being a Blackfish”.

Now the MailOnline claims that Jesy feels betrayed by her former bandmate and feels she has experienced heightened trolling online due to the backlash.

A source told the outlet: “Jesy is turning to friends for support during this time as the trolling which so badly affected her during her Little Mix days has come back in a big way – and that's one of the reasons why she left the band in the first place.

“It should have been a positive and happy celebration but it's been tainted by what has started to feel like a personal attack against her.”

The star is also allegedly disillusioned by the fact her solo music has been overshadowed by the backlash.

The source claimed: “It's now become a Little Mix vs Jesy storyline, when ultimately the band and Jesy have always stood for anti-bullying so it's a shame to see this taking such a sour turn.

“Jesy has been saddened to hear that somebody she once referred to as 'family' has been encouraging online hate towards her, and whilst she appears in a much better head space after going solo, friends and family are checking in with her daily to make sure she's okay.”

While the MailOnline report also claimed Jesy could not believe "someone she once called family could be so cruel".

The Mirror have contacted representatives of both Jesy and Leigh-Anne for comment.

Jesy herself has denied accusations of cultural appropriation and blackfishing both through interviews and speaking to fans on social medai.

Over the weekend, she told Vulture: “I’m very aware that I'm a white British woman; I've never said that I wasn't.

"But I mean, like, I love Black culture. I love Black music. That's all I know; it's what I grew up on."

While in an Instagram interview on Monday, she said: "I personally want to say that my intention was never, ever to offend people of colour with this video and my song because like I said, growing up as a young girl, this is the music that I listened to.

"These are the videos that I watched and thought were the best. For me personally, ’90s/2000 hip hop, R&B music was the best era of music.

"I just wanted to celebrate that. I just wanted to celebrate that era of music because it is what I love.”

She has also been defended by her Boyz guest rapper, Nicki Minaj, who hit out at Leigh-Anne and little mix to brand them "clowns" and accuse them of being jealous of their former bandmate's solo success.
