Jon Jones will fight Ciryl Gane or Francis Ngannou for belt but will LOSE, claims Daniel Cormier

Jon Jones will not become the UFC’s heavyweight champion when he finally returns to the octagon, according to his old rival Daniel Cormier.

The bad blood between the pair seems as though it will never dissipate but DC is adamant that both men competing for the title at UFC 270, Francis Ngannou and Ciryl Gane, would beat ‘Bones’.

Jones has been working on increasing his size and power since announcing his move up from light-heavyweight but has not fought for almost two years.

Francis Ngannou (left) and Ciryl Gane (right) are better than Jon Jones, says Daniel Cormier

Cormier believes the best heavyweights are now ‘on another level’ and the 34-year-old will fall short.

‘I believe that Jon Jones will fight at heavyweight, and he’ll fight for the belt, but he’ll lose to Ciryl Gane or Francis Ngannou’, Cormier said on ESPN.

‘And I just think that the time away, with the weight difference, and those guys being who they are, that’s the problem.

‘It’s not that Jones has gotten worse – it’s just that these guys are a different level of heavyweight.’

Ngannou, the champion, faces interim belt holder Gane in the main event next Saturday.

Cormier believes the lay-off and weight change would be of significance for Jones

It will be an intriguing battle between the phenomenal power of the Cameroon native and the movement of his French opponent.

Jones had been edging towards a possible fight with Stipe Miocic but the timetable of his return is uncertain a domestic violence charge in Nevada. He later reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Jones defeated Cormier twice in one of the most intense rivalries in UFC history, although one of those losses was overturned when the victor tested positive for a banned substance.

No doubt it is a matter of time before Jones sees what Cormier makes of his chances and bites back.
