A contestant on this year’s series of Junior Bake Off was more than willing to lend a helping hand when one of his competitors broke down in tears.

On this evening’s episode, the young bakers taking part in Junior Bake Off – the spin-off of The Great British Bake Off – set about making a variety of sweet treats for Dessert Day.

For their technical, in a challenge set by judge and former Bake Off star Liam Charles, they were tasked with following a recipe for a ‘mega choccy stack’, which consisted of a chocolate pudding sandwiched between chocolate brownies and topped with whipped cream.

Early on, Maddi, 14, encountered some trouble when she forgot to add the remaining milk to her brownie mixture, resulting in her having to start again.

Later when trying to make whipped cream, she found she was causing it to split by overworking it with the whisk, resulting in her bursting into tears.

One of the best parts of Bake Off – aside from the incredible bakes the contestants make – is the extraordinary sense of camaraderie on the show.

The minute he saw Maddi struggling, Zack, 13, wandered over to her station, consoling her and telling her he was more than happy to help her out.

As Maddi tried to whip the cream again, Zack stood by her side, letting her know when it was done.

One Junior Bake Off viewer described Zack as a ‘king’ on Twitter after witnessing his kind act of compassion.

Zack’s assistance proved a significant factor in Maddi’s performance in the first challenge, as she ended up impressing judges Liam and Ravneet Gill so much that she clinched the number one spot in the technical.

At the end of the episode, she was named Star Baker, with Will, 12, becoming the latest contestant to be sent home.
