Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders has hinted a number of players will make their first-team debuts in the Carabao Cup tie with Lincoln City.

Jurgen Klopp's No.2 pledged to "attack" the fixture when facing the media ahead of the Thursday night game, with new signings Diogo Jota and Kostas Tsimikas likely to make their maiden appearances.

The Reds are expected to make sweeping changes to the team which beat Chelsea 2-0 on Sunday as they travel to League One club Lincoln.

Alongside new arrivals Jota and Tsimikas, academy prospect Billy Koumetio may be handed a start in defence in light of injuries to Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

Koumetio, 17, joined Liverpool from Orleans in 2018 and impressed at the Reds' summer training camp in Austria.

The France youth international was named on the bench for the Community Shield match with Arsenal, though a minor injury ruled him out of contention for the squad which travelled to Chelsea on Sunday.

But Lijnders confirmed Koumetio is back in contention for the trip to Lincoln as he heaped praise on the youngster.

The Dutchman said: “He’s a proper talent. He needs time but he’s a proper talent. We want to give him that time.

“He’s a very tall centre-back, but has a real strength in the air, not only in set-pieces. If you are a pressing team, you have to accept there will be a lot of long balls and second balls, so it’s really important that you have centre-halves that are good in the air.

“Billy, even in the air, can put the ball where he wants to put it. For his age, that’s really good and then you see his physicality, how strong he is.

“We like to give him the opportunity to develop with us and become a strong centre-half for the future for Liverpool FC.”
