Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed when the club’s new signing Ibrahima Konate will make his first appearance for the club.

The Reds confirmed the signing of the highly rated France Under-21 international in May when they completed a £36million move from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.

Konate is the only summer arrival at Anfield so far this summer and his signing followed a season in which the club suffered multiple long-term injuries in the position.

Virgil van Dijk missed the majority of the season with a knee ligament injury while Joe Gomez and Joel Matip also missed large sections of the campaign with injuries.

The Reds completed the double signing of Preston defender Ben Davies and the loan arrival of Ozan Kabak in January, while midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho were sporadically deployed in the position.

Kabak has subsequently returned to Schalke with Konate now signed and likely to be a regular in Klopp’s starting line-up for the new campaign.

He is set to feature in the club’s opening matches of pre-season on Tuesday, when they play two short matches in Austria at their training camp.

The Reds will face FC Wacker Innsbruck (5pm BST kick-off) and VfB Stuttgart (5.45pm BST kick-off) in two 30-minute mini-games.

It has now been confirmed that Konate is in line to feature in those matches and pull on the Liverpool shirt for the first time.

Klopp told the Reds official club website when asked about when Konate would first line up for the Reds: “Tuesday. He’s had a good rest, had a normal pre-season so far, so yeah, he can play on Tuesday.

"For Ibou it is important that he gets minutes quickly, that’s what pre-season is for.

“All the people from outside will say there are similarities between Leipzig and us and that is true, but anyway there are differences as well and the similarities are important but the differences are more important because you see that in training.

"There are some little habits where he is doing different to what we usually do, so we work on that but that’s now not that easy because that’s only six days now.

“So, all fine, completely normal. The first few days are there to realise what is the boy doing when he is not thinking.

"So, natural stuff. And then from there we start and that’s why he has to play and that’s what will happen.

"Then we will see how quickly we can get all this information together for him and then everything is fine.

"For a defender it’s not as difficult as it would be for other players but it’s still a job to do, and that is what we are doing.”
