Jurgen Klopp has praised the efforts of Harvey Elliott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after the Liverpool pair excelled in new roles.

The Reds are in the midst of their pre-season preparations and played two separate 30-minute friendlies against Wacker Innsbruck and Stuttgart – both games ending 1-1.

Klopp was trialing new ideas which saw certain individuals playing in unorthodox positions.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has been hampered by injuries recently, occupied a false nine role.

Meanwhile Elliott has found opportunities harder to come by and spent last season away on loan at Blackburn.

The highly-rated teenager played in central midfield and Klopp was more than satisfied with what he saw.

Jurgen Klopp was impressed with the positional tweaks in their pre-season run outs

"I don’t think Harvey had ever played that position for us, but he looked good," he told LFC TV after the game.

"Ox you could see in the first few minutes immediately that it is an option, definitely. We will see how that goes on.

"Ibou [Konate] did really well and that’s what we expected, he looks really good in training.

"First game with all the young boys, they have really showed up in training but it is different than when you play a first-team with all the kids together in the team.

"It is tough, but no problem – life is tough and we have to give them the opportunity to get tested in these kinds of games. We do that and now we carry on."

Harvey Elliott excelled in a midfield role

Klopp is biding his time when it comes to reintroducing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, with both men returning from long-term injuries.

Joel Matip has made his return whilst Ibrahima Konate played for the Reds for the first time.

Klopp doesn't expect to see Van Dijk and Gomez feature in the club's next friendly on Friday however as he eases them back in gradually.

"They have looked really good in training and yesterday was the first day where they did very complex things, usually it is either offensive or defensive and stuff like this.

"We have to get there, step by step, but I don’t expect them for Friday."

Reports in Spain have also suggested that Liverpool have looked to make moves for Saul Niguez.

Diario Sport reports that a bid of €40m (£34.5) plus either Xherdan Shaqiri or Jordan Henderson has been lodged.

Klopp has lost Gini Wijnaldum this summer and will be looking to bolster his midfield ranks with Henderson's contract talks also showing no progress thus far.
