Kerry Katona had to sell ‘pet parrot to buy tampons’ as she details money woes

Kerry Katona has always been frank about the financial struggles she has face before and after finding fame as a member of chart-topping girlband Atomic Kitten.

The star – who has recently bounced back from bankruptcy – experienced a troubled childhood, going from foster home to foster home due to her mother's mental health and addiction issues.

And in a new interview, the former pop sensation – who found fame in Atomic Kitten in 1998 – has reflected on once being so strapped for cash as a teenager that she was forced to flog her pet parrot, Alfie, so she could purchase sanitary products.

"When I was 17 we sold my parrot, Alfie for £20 so I could buy some Tampax," the Whole Again hitmaker told The Times.

Explaining what happened, she continued: "I had his gig paying e £50 to dance in a nightclub and I got my period, so I needed sanitary towels, but we didn’t have the money, that was the last we heard for Alfie."

In 2008, Kerry declared herself bankrupt, after failing to pay over £86,000 of a tax bill.

The following year, she then claimed that her ex-husband, Mark Croft, with who she ended her marriage with in 2010, of 'bleeding her dry'.

"This has to end. Mark's bled me dry. He won't take another penny of my money," Kerry said of her relationship on her MTV show.

In June, Kerry was over the moon to announce she was moving into a mega-mansion in Cheshire after getting her finances back on track.

Proud of her achievement she told fans on Instagram : "I woke up in my new house today, I wanted to give you a sneak peek."

Revealing a state-of-the-art kitchen the star quipped: "That’s just the kitchen. I know right? I can’t believe it. I honestly to god just can't believe it."

She went on to give a tour of the plush home and added: "Beautiful gardens. It’s a new chapter guys! I feel really overwhelmed.

"Not only have I climbed halfway back up I’ve climbed all the way up to the top."

"Who’d have thought I’d have made it through? If you were to put a bet at the bookies if I was going to end up dead, I would have taken that bet."

The Celebs Go Dating name, who had a well-documented battle with drink and drugs confessed: "The last time I lived here (in Cheshire) I was doing loads of coke, losing all my money, hanging around d*******s who used and abused me."

Kerry – who has managed to improve her bank balance through OnlyFans – credits her partner Ryan Mahoney for helping her back on her feet and since they've been together they have started several business ventures.

She previously gushed: "I’ve worked really hard to turn this all around.

"And I wouldn’t have been able to do this without my Ryan."
