Kirsten Dunst reflects on upside-down kiss with Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man: ‘It looked great’

Kirsten Dunst reminisced on her famous upside-down smooch with Tobey Maguire in 2002’s box office smash Spider-Man, which grossed $821.7 million worldwide.

Due to the awkward harnesses and freezing cold conditions, the 39-year-old actress spidey-senses did not foresee the moment her character Mary Jane unmasked Peter Parker (Maguire) to lock lips in the pouring rain turning into such ‘a famous kiss.’

‘Water was getting up his nose because of the rain, and then he couldn’t breathe in the Spider-Man suit … and it just felt very late at night,’ she told W Magazine. ‘I didn’t think about it that way.’

She continued: ‘But the way it was presented to me, [director Sam Raimi] gave me this book of famous kisses, so that made me realize how romantic and special Sam wanted this to be,’ she explained. ‘Even though it wasn’t necessarily feeling that way with Tobey hanging upside down.’

Dunst went on to say she is very ‘proud’ that her and Maguire’s upside-down kiss is considered among the greatest on film and even earned the MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss in 2003.

‘It looked like a great kiss,’ she mused, even though water was pouring into her on-screen love interest’s nostrils as they were drenched in cold water.

Unexpected: Due to the awkward harnesses and freezing cold conditions, the 39-year-old actress spidey-senses did not foresee the moment her character Mary Jane unmasked Peter Parker halfway to lock lips in the pouring rain to become ‘a famous kiss’ (seen with Tobey Maguire in the iconic scene)

‘Water was getting up his nose because of the rain, and then he couldn’t breathe in the Spider-Man suit … and it just felt very late at night,’ the actress reminisced. ‘I didn’t think about it that way’

Back in 2002, Maguire told Deseret News that the rain he ‘couldn’t breathe’ and was ‘gasping for breath out of the corner of Kirsten’s mouth’ during the scene.

‘Poor girl. I was giving her mouth to mouth rather than kissing her,’ 46-year-old actor remembered.

After meeting on set, Maguire and Dunst began dating in 2001 while filming the first movie, but called it quits after a year together.

Good memories: Dunst also said she is very ‘proud’ that her and Maguire’s famous upside-down kiss is considered among the greatest on film and was awarded the MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss in 2003; pictured in December

Despite breaking up before their blockbuster’s sequel, the duo went on the star in Spider-Man 2 ( (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007) together.

She has since moved on with Jesse Plemons, who she met while filming the FX series Fargo’ in 2015, and now shares sons three-year-old son Ennis and James, eight months.

When asked if she would be open to returning to the franchise, Dunst replied: ‘I would do it. Why not? That would be fun.’

‘I would never say no to something like that,’ she confirmed. I’d be old MJ at this point with little Spidey babies.’
