Trippier is settled in Spain, his family are happy and he has been a huge success since his £25m move to Atletico in 2019, often praising Diego Simeone for improving the defensive side of his game.

Trippier, who switched agents earlier this year from Pitch to Base Soccer ahead of the summer window, helped Atletico win La Liga last season and was a key member of their title-winning team.

But Trippier has not hidden his desire to one day return to English football and this season his game time has been more limited as Atletico boss Simeone has used different formations.

Trippier has also been out with a shoulder injury but expects to be back before Christmas and within the next three to four weeks and Atletico are braced for bids in the January window.

Newcastle are stuck in the middle of a relegation scrap but the Saudi-led takeover means they have money to spend and will be able to tempt players with big contracts and transfer fees.

England boss Gareth Southgate is a huge fan of Trippier, has given him the captain’s armband in the past and his ability on the ball, leadership and improved defensive ability has made him a very attractive option.
