Manchester United has recovered Cristiano Ronaldo’s £13million transfer fee before he has even set foot on the pitch.

.

Ronaldo, 36 – who was with United from 2003 to 2009 – will on Saturday make his second debut at the club when they take on Newcastle at Old Trafford.

After £187m of Ronaldo’s replica No7 shirts sold in just one week, Man U earned £13.1m in commission – topping the £12.9m fee the club paid to Juventus.

The Portuguese superstar’s return to Manchester has generated huge interest from fans.

United’s retail partner, Fanatics, said that within four hours of his comeback announcement, sales of the Ronaldo shirt surpassed the existing record for a single day’s sales of sports kit outside the US.

Ronaldo’s United contract, which is thought to be £500,000 a week, is for two years plus an optional year.

But the star has been tipped to play on until he is 40 and become the oldest scorer in the Premier League, beating former United forward Teddy Sheringham, who scored 32 goals after he turned 36.

United legend Wayne Rooney, 35, has told how he expects to see Ronaldo on the pitch at 40.

Rooney, now the manager of Derby, said: “I can see him playing on until that age, like Ryan Giggs.”

Ronaldo’s partner Georgina Rodriguez, 27, is likely to be in the crowd on Saturday with his 11-year-old son, Cristiano Jnr.

Coral make Ronaldo odds-on at 4-9 to get a goal against Newcastle – and boss Steve Bruce fears the worst.

He said: “The goals Ronaldo has scored at every club he has played for are quite remarkable.

“That makes him the best player in the world.”

After his return to United was announced, Ronaldo posted a jubilant Instagram message that read: “New challenge, but always with the same goals. Let’s go!”

His new teammate, Bruno Fernandes, 27. said only Lionel Messi, 34, could rival Ronaldo in the modern game. He said: “Only he could achieve what Cristiano has.”

But Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain shirts have only made PSG £7.3m since his transfer from Barcelona.
