Manchester United open to Eric Bailly joining AC Milan on loan and could include option to buy

Manchester United are open to sending Eric Bailly on loan to AC Milan this month amid interest from Stefano Pioli’s side, according to reports in Italy.

Bailly, 27, has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford this season, making just four appearances in the Premier League and seven in all competitions.

Raphael Varane’s arrival from Real Madrid last summer pushed the Ivory Coast defender further down in the pecking order, and he could now be set to leave United on loan.

According to Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan want to bring Bailly to the San Siro on an initial loan deal this month.

They are on the hunt for a new defender in January after losing Simon Kjaer to long-term injury, with the Denmark star expected to spend the next six months on the sidelines.

Bailly is understood to be one of their top targets and United are open to letting him depart on loan, while they could even insert an option-to-buy clause into the deal.

Milan have also been monitoring Manchester City defender Nathan Ake, however the Dutchman’s hefty salary is out of their reach.

Lille’s Sven Botman was another centre-back on the Serie A outfit’s radar, but club director Frederic Massara has doubts over his availability.

‘The role of a centre-back is our priority after Kjaer’s injury,’ Massara told Sky Sports Italy, via Football Italia. ‘In a period like this with so many absentees also due to COVID, we will certainly be ready if we can find a sustainable option on the market.

‘Botman is a very good player, but I don’t think Lille want to deprive themselves of him at the moment. There are many options to be considered.

‘There are possibilities to be evaluated, as it’s a very uncertain time for clubs, especially with the stadiums closing back down, so we need to think very carefully.’
