Pochettino carries Premier League pedigree, having led Tottenham to a second place finish in the 2016-17 season.

His PSG side are currently clear at the top of Ligue 1, having lost just once all season, but there have been whispers of the 49-year-old leaving before the end of the season.

Zinedine Zidane, a manager also mentioned in consideration for the United job, is reportedly being considered to replace Pochettino in the French capital.

Zidane's name is said to have come up in conversations between members of PSG's squad, with reports on the continent suggesting he could take over before the end of the season and free up Pochettino to move to Old Trafford.

While talk of a United move persists, Pochettino's main task this week is to get a result from a tricky trip to Manchester City.

PSG beat the Premier League champions at the Parc des Princes in September, but dropped points in subsequent games means defeat at the Etihad will ensure City top the group and potentially leave the French side with a harder draw in the knockout stages.

United sacked Solskjaer after Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Watford, with the team ending the weekend 12 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea ahead of their meeting this coming weekend.

Pochettino and Zidane are just two of the names mentioned in connection with the vacancy, with Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers and Ajax's Erik ten Hag also reportedly considered for the post.

United issued a statement after Solskjaer's dismissal in which they suggested an interim appointment would be sought until the end of the season, at which point a new permanent incumbent would be brought in.

However, if one of their targets becomes available before the end of the 2021-22 campaign, their plans could yet change.
