Yet former Spurs boss Pochettino remains the priority long-term objective for the Red Devils and his actions in Manchester on Wednesday are the biggest hint yet he is open to a move to Old Trafford.

A United fan approached the PSG boss at the club’s hotel where they were preparing for Wednesday night’s Champions League fixture at the Etihad Stadium against City.

The fan happened to have a United shirt at the time and made the request to Pochettino to sign his shirt – which the Argentine accepted.

The gesture came amid intense speculation over the PSG coach’s future and with United hopeful of appointing him as a permanent boss this week.

Pochettino was only appointed at the Parc des Princes in January this year but has struggled to assert his authority in a dressing room where the influence of a coach is more limited than elsewhere.

PSG missed out on last season’s Ligue 1 title to rank outsiders Lille, while they fell short in the Champions League as they were eliminated by City at the semi-final stage.

PSG sacked Thomas Tuchel on Christmas Eve last year, and the German has gone on to enjoy great success with Chelsea – whom he guided to European glory last season and to the top of the Premier League this campaign.

This season there appears to be little doubt over the destination of the Ligue 1 title as PSG comfortably sit 11 points clear at the top of the standings after winning 12 of their opening 14 matches.

PSG are also on course for qualification to the Round of 16 of the Champions League, but Pochettino is reportedly open to leaving the club mid-season as he is not content with the scope of his role in the French capital.
