Mean Girls star Lacey Chabert's sister has died aged 46.

The actress announced the tragic news on her social media on Tuesday, saying she was 'brokenhearted' by what happened.

"My beautiful sister, Wendy," the actress, who played Gretchen Wieners, wrote. " Our hearts are shattered into a million pieces that I don’t know how we will ever put back together again now that you’re gone.

"We love and adore you more than we can ever say and we will continue to forever and ever and ever. The shocking loss has left us so broken hearted.

"Our lives will never be the same without my dear sister, but we cling to the promises of Jesus that we will be together again in eternity."

She concluded: "Please keep our family, especially her two boys, in your hearts and prayers. Thank you so much".

She shared a picture of her sister

Followers took to the comment section to pay their respects.

"I am so so sorry for you and your family! Prayers being sent your way," one user wrote.

Sarah Nicole Landry added: "Lacey I am so heartbroken for you and your family. Thinking of you today and the days to come."

" So sorry for you loss. Sending love and prayers to you and your family," another said..

Lacey, 38, became a movie icon with her role as Gretchen Wieners in the 2004 teen comedy Mean Girls.

She has since moved on to star in Hallmarks movies.

She's appeared in endless movies for the channel – including A Wish For Christmas, Christmas in Rome and Love, Romance & Chocolate in 2019.

Lacey also has a sister named Chrissy and a brother called Tony.

In March 2016, she shared on Twitter that her brother Tony was very ill with leukaemia and needed prayers from her followers.

Five months later, she revealed the good news that he was in remission.

In an Instagram post, she wrote: “This birthday is extra special. He and his wife are expecting a baby boy this week and Tony’s leukemia is in remission. Four more months of chemo to go, but praise God he’s doing great. I love you so much TJ! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!"

Lacey is married to David Nehdar, with the two sharing daughter Julia Mimi Bella together.
