One of the biggest fashion events of the year got underway on Monday night as stars attended the Met Gala at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, raising funds for its Costume Institute.

Stars had creative freedom once again with this year's theme, which is In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. It honours the 75th anniversary of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Check out the most outrageous choice of attire from the Met Gala 2021 here;

Lil Nas X

The singer made a huge statement in not one, not two but THREE outfits to make his first Met Gala.

For his first outfit reveal, the 22-year-old wore an royal-like ornate cape that was covered in intricate gold beading. He then removed it to showcase a golden suit of armour as he battled for the best dressed title.

Once again he shed his suit and stunned in another golden number – this time he donned a slinky bodysuit which was covered in crystals and Versace’s signature house print.

Canadian musician Grimes never fails to make a statement, so it was to be expected she would stun at the Met Gala.

There are not many people who choose to bring a sword to the event, but that's exactly what the 33-year-old did as she rocked up in a 'Dune-esque' outfit.

As well as a sword, the singer showcased an extravagant outfit covered in intricate beading and a chrome face mask. Her hair was pulled back in an anti-gravity ponytail.

Billie Eilish

Is it really a Met Gala without huge trains? Singer Billie Eilish certainly delivered on that front with her Marilyn Monroe-inspired old-school Hollywood look.

The 19-year-old is known for changing up her look and she looked extremely glamorous in the lace number, which had a ball skirt and long train.

The star will make history as the youngest ever co-chair of the prestigious event.

Congresswoman Carolyn B Maloney, 75, certainly read the memo as she turned up with a powerful message on her outfit.

She wore colourful number with a powerful message which could clearly be seen from every angle.

The purple, white, yellow and green ensemble came off her shoulder like ribbons, fanning out bigger the further down it got, with the message saying: "Equal rights for women."
