He also allegedly shouted: "He f***** with the wrong baller" on the training ground – but his outburst didn't go down well with Carrick.

The now temporary boss, who was a coach at the time, is said to have reacted angrily to the comment and reminded the World Cup winner that no one is bigger than the club.

Carrick's reaction to the incident goes a long way to explaining why United chiefs believe the Englishman is the right man for the time being.

Carrick has proven himself a respectful individual who holds the Red Devils values close to his heart.

And the former United midfielder got off to a fast start in his managerial career on Tuesday night, guiding the Red Devils to victory in the Champions League.

Following the 2-0 win over Villarreal, Carrick said: "The result obviously is a major plus from the run we've gone on – we can't hide that.

"To get that feeling of winning a football match for the players is huge, and to keep a clean sheet, David (de Gea) was important again so all round there's a lot of positives to take.

"The biggest [positive] I'll take is how everyone adapted, the reaction and how they pulled together. In situations like this, there are mixed emotions. It's a test of people and you find out who the real characters are, who's there with you and who's not.

"I thought everyone stuck together in terms of supporting me and my staff and we managed to get the win which is very pleasing. It was a big one."
