Millicent Simmonds to play Helen Keller in biopic set during the activist’s young adult years

A Quiet Place star Millicent Simmonds will play her distant cousin, disability rights activist Helen Keller, in an upcoming biopic.  

The movie, titled Helen & Teacher, will follow a young Keller during her tumultuous experience at Radcliffe College in the first decade of the 20th century, according to The Hollywood Reporter. 

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan will co-star in the film as Keller’s devoted but controlling translator.

‘Most people only know of Helen Keller’s story from when she was a child,’ director Wash Westmoreland said. ‘Helen & Teacher will look at her as a young adult when she developed a radical, world-changing political voice.

‘Today, when some TikTok threads dispute Helen Keller’s achievements and even her existence, it is time for a film that shows her relevance, her brilliance, and her unbreakable spirit.’ 

The film is being written by Laetitia Mikles and Westmoreland in consultation with a team at Helen Keller National Center for Youth and Adults.

The team at Cornerstone, which is handling international sales and distribution, said they are excited to tell Keller’s story. 

‘We are looking forward to re-introduce one of the most famous teacher-student relationships in modern history,’ said Alison Thompson and Mark Gooder, two Cornerstone employees. 

They added, ‘The lifelong work on disability rights by these two remarkable women paved the way for future generations. What better way to do it than with this talented creative team.’

Another Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on the way: Brosnahan finished filming the fourth season of the show earlier this year

Simmonds, who herself is deaf and a distant cousin of Helen Keller, gained recognition for her role as Rose in the period piece Wonderstruck. 

In addition, she will likely reprise her role as Regan in A Quiet Place Part III which is set for a 2023 release. 

Brosnahan, on the other hand, has kept busy recently on her show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The Golden Globe Award winner finished filming season 4 of the show earlier this year.

She has other projects on the horizon including Dead for a Dollar, which centers around a bounty hunter who runs into an outlaw he sent to prison years before.
