Monty Don supported by fans after sharing pic of beloved dog taken on day he died

Monty Don has been supported by fans after he shared the last photo of his beloved dog Nigel, which was taken on the day the hound passed away.

The 65-year-old Gardeners' World presenter honoured the first anniversary of his pet's sad death by opening up about the emotional day that the Golden Retriever died, 12 months ago, after falling ill.

The horticulturalist said Nigel had suffered from “violent fits” as he spoke out in a heartbreaking post in which he shared the stunning snap of his four-legged friend.

Captioning the photo of the dog looking resplendent in the sunshine, Monty wrote: "This picture of Nigel taken exactly a year ago – and later that day he died.

"I like to think that his life was good right to the very end."

A day before the dog passed away last year, Monty had shared his worries after Nigel started having seizures.

In an interview, Monty said that he was "shocked" by what happened: "It was a lovely day and he’d been outside and at 7 o’clock in the evening we went for a walk, he was fine, and I put him to bed at 10 o’clock.

“Then at one in the morning, my son, because my son and daughter-in-law have been in lockdown with us, woke me and said, ‘Nigel is having fits’. So I stayed with him for the rest of the night and he fitted all night.”

Speaking to the Griefcast podcast, Monty added: “It’s such a violent thing and you feel as someone who’s trying to help, I sort of know what to do, but it feels inadequate because it’s so violent and people can break bones and anyway, you have a large dog doing just that all night, again and again and again.”
