Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has opened the door for some of United's talented youngsters to impress after calling up eight youth players to train with the senior side.

A host of Solskjaer's squad have jetted off on international duty for the next fortnight, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho.

With United's current ranks depleted until their return, the Old Trafford chief has invited some of the club's most promising prospects to link up with the first team.

Charlie Savage, the son of former Leicester City ace Robbie Savage, was one of the teenagers involved, along with Alvaro Fernandez, Bjorn Hardley, Dillon Hoogewerf, Joe Hugill, Marc Jurado, Charlie McNeill, and Charlie Wellens.

The octet have a chance to impress the Norwegian ahead of United's trip to Leicester when they resume their Premier League campaign this weekend.

United have garnered a reputation for handing opportunities to young players over the years.

In his playing years, Solskjaer was part of one of the most successful United teams of any era – driven by the golden group of academy graduates, donned as 'The Class of 92'.

The Norwegian has played his part in continuing that tradition since his appointment on a permanent basis as United boss back in 2019.

Mason Greenwood was one of the senior names who has remained at Carrington over the international break.

His success since breaking into the United side and nailing down a regular spot under Solskjaer in his teenage years won't have been lost of the academy stars who will now be playing alongside him this week.

The international break has come at an opportune moment for Solskjaer following a torrid run of form.

United have registered just two wins from their last six games.

But Solskjaer has been backed by his former team-mate Paul Scholes to turn around United's rotten run.

"Well, you never know with managers," Scholes told Webby & O'Neill when discussing Solskjaer's current position after a crescendo of criticism.

"You can go on a run of five to six games, but if you don’t win a game then your position is going to be under threat.

"I think they back him and I think he deserves a chance. We’ve seen it under Van Gaal and Mourinho, we’ve seen how bad this team has been over the last few years and it took Ole two or three years, to now build a team of players where you expect something.

"I think last year we didn’t really expect it, we hoped. But now something is expected, we expect him to win something, we expect him to get close. Man United, for me, aren’t in the position to start resting players.

"They’ve got to go into every game with their best team.”
