Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand agree on Man Utd manager decision amid ‘two big problems’

Michael Carrick oversaw Man United's two-goal victory at Villarreal on Tuesday night

.

Hargreaves started the debate by claiming that Carrick could become a contender for the position for the remainder of the season, at least, if United were to ‘get a result’ away at Chelsea this weekend.

Hargreaves argued: “Obviously it can all change at Chelsea but if Michael gets a result.

“If he’s winning like Ole nobody anticipated him getting the job full time but because his results were there they did it whether it was the right thing to do or not but if Michael keeps clean sheets and climb up the table then they will have to look at him they have to.”

That led to both Scholes and Ferdinand uniting to disagree with their former teammate, and instead claiming that Carrick should not be in the running.

Scholes stated: “This is Manchester United they have to have the best in charge!

“Michael Carrick is a coach he’s had one game in charge with no experience anywhere else, he can’t.

“As much as I like the lad they can’t appoint him they need the very best at interim or full time.”

Ferdinand agreed with Scholes, adding: “I don’t think they will give it to Michael.

“One thing certain is they are actively looking for somebody to be an interim to take us through until the end of the season then they will look for someone else to come in at the end of the season.

“You’re looking at Laurent Blanc; someone who wouldn’t be full-time.

“Someone like Pochettino when he was out of a job…there was murmurs he wanted to come to Man United in that period and it depends on how PSG see it.

“We have to wait and see but Man United need to make enquiries if they want a manager who is in a job those conversations will be going on now.”

With the conversation then revolving to Antonio Conte – who United did not pursue and was subsequently appointed at Tottenham – Scholes argued that he would not have been the solution for the Red Devils.

The former midfielder added: “Man United need a long term manager to build because they have to big problems- Liverpool and Man City.

“You’re telling me Conte could come in and get them anywhere near Liverpool and Manchester City?

“I don’t see it.

“I think it will take a couple of years again which isn’t something we want to talk about to get the squad right and the way of playing right to compete with those two clubs.

“I think there’s a lot of quality but it still feels like we’re short of players.

“We’ve said this for four or five years. But if they bring a proper coach in, can a new coach bring the best out of these players.

“Recruitment-wise if you’re relying on your striker who’s 36, I worry. I think they need a midfielder when it comes to controlling the game they need to see runs.”
