Phillip Schofield was left gutted after being seated behind Boy George and his massive hat for the ITV special An Audience With Adele.

Held at the London Palladium, the audience was packed to the rafters with huge stars, including Samuel L Jackson, Emma Thompson, Dawn French, Jodie Comer, and Alan Carr.

Phillip attended the eagerly-awaited performance by the Oscar-winning singer with his estranged wife Stephanie Lowe, but while he was seated in front of Home Alone and Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara, he was unfortunately placed behind the former Culture Club frontman.

Boy George, 60, was wearing a huge rounded blue hat for Adele’s spectacular evening, which celebrated her new album 30, teamed with a pink spotted shirt.

Eagle-eyed viewers took to Twitter to point out Phillip, who could be seen gradually craning his neck to see around the DJ’s massive accessory to see Adele on stage.

Some of Phillip’s irked fans felt that the hat was too ostentatious for such an intimate event, and said the musician was being “inconsiderate” to others around him.

“Yeah I thought that was bit inconsiderate wearing that hat,” one viewer fumed, as another added: “That would reeaallyy p*ss me right off.”

Despite his misfortune, Phillip was able to see the funny side.

Later, Phillip was seen in another part of the audience

One fan tweeted a picture of the presenter peering around Boy George, and captioned it: “When you can’t see from behind Boy George’s hat @Schofe,” prompting the 59-year-old to retweet the post alongside three crying laughing emojis.

Some viewers think Phillip was moved during one point in the show, as later, he's spotted sitting near Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway, and Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander.

His lighthearted reaction to his poor seat choice was echoed by his followers, who replied to his post with good humour.

“Screaming I was wondering what poor soul was sat behind him and it was Phil,” one wrote.

“We caught the last ten minutes and only saw the hat from a distance. I said ‘I bet that’s Boy George in the hat!' Poor b****r whoever’s sat behind him!’” another joked, as one tweeted: “Really made me laugh, that would be just my luck.”

“We actually commented last night saying we would really peed off if we were sat behind Boy George!!” one quipped.

“Does his head go all the way to the top of that hat?” another responded.

And some viewers managed to confuse Boy George with one of Phillip’s ITV co-stars.

“I thought it was your mate Keith Lemon,” one commented.
