Ralf Rangnick has told Marcus Rashford he must be more consistent if he wants to be a regular for Manchester United.

Rashford is enduring the first real crisis of his playing career, bereft of form and confidence, and without a goal in his last 11 games for United.

The England striker had a torrid time in United's 1-0 FA Cup win over Aston Villa last Monday and is set to be on the bench for tonight's Premier League trip to Villa Park.

Although Rangnick praised Rashford's performances in training, United's interim boss said the 24-year-old must translate that to matchdays if he wants to keep his place.

“I was not a striker myself as a player, but as a striker we all know it’s all about playing well, scoring goals and getting assists,” said Rangnick.

“If that doesn't happen over a period of time, it's not so easy. As long as he’s trying to give his very best – and he did that in training.

“There were quite a few training sessions in the last couple of weeks where he trained on a really high level and that’s why I always gave him the chance to play again.

“As long as he does that, he will always be on my list to play and be in the starting eleven.

“In the first 20 minutes against Aston Villa he was good, he was on fire, he was emotionally involved.

“Then, after the first 30 minutes, he got worse and he didn’t play on the same kind of energetic level he did in the first half an hour.

“It’s about showing that on a regular basis and continuously playing on a high level and again, for him, there is still room for improvement but the same is true of other young players.

“We have so many top, talented players and we have to work and develop as a team together.”

Despite Cristiano Ronaldo's status as the most high-profile and decorated member of United's squad, Rangnick has no plans to make him captain and take the armband from Harry Maguire.

“Right now, I don’t see a reason to do that, because Harry has been the captain so far and as long as Harry is playing, he will be the captain,” said Rangnick.

“If he’s not playing, then someone else will have to be the captain. This can change from game to game, depending on who is playing.”

United have failed to kick on as expected in their six games under Rangnick, who admitted he wants to see a big improvement as his side try to get back into contention for fourth spot.
