RHOC alum Elizabeth Vargas says she was ‘in the same situation’ as Erika Jayne

Real Housewives of Orange County alum Elizabeth Vargas has thrown her support behind Erika Jayne amid the RHOBH star’s ongoing legal woes and divorce from Tom Giradi.

Speaking to the Unpopular podcast, Elizabeth said that she believed Erika was in the dark about Tom’s financial dealings because she, too, was in a similar situation with her own ex-husband, Norwegian businessman Bernt Bodal.

Elizabeth, 45, was a struggling jazz singer in her early 20s when she met the millionaire entrepreneur in a nightclub.

Her story closely mirrors Erika’s, who was a cocktail waitress and aspiring performer in New York City when she met Giradi.

‘I’m telling you what girl, I believe you when you say you didn’t know what the f**k he was doing,’ Elizabeth said on Unpopular.

‘You don’t know where that money’s going, you don’t even know where you’re getting the money from,’ she continued.

‘You get it, you don’t ask questions, and you enjoy your life. I was in that situation, I completely understand her.

‘I wish I knew her because I would hug her and tell her, coming from nothing and getting something, you’re engulfed in this weird world of money, you don’t ask questions.’

She added: ‘[Erika] had a great life and now she’s gotta live normal. Welcome to the club, honey!’

Elizabeth split from her ex-husband in 2017, but their divorce wasn’t finalised in 2020.

The blonde reality star opened up about her marriage and divorce during season 15 of the Real Housewives of Orange County.

‘I grew up garbage-can poor. We were country hillbillies. During my divorce, I was depressed for three years on my couch,’ she said on the premiere.

‘My soon-to-be ex-husband is billionaire businessman Bernt Bodal. During college I started at this dinner theatre cabaret. He would come in all the time. I walked over to him and started singing big spender and he was sold!’

She continued: ‘He was smart. We would fly to the Bahamas… It was crazy to come from nothing and here is this wealthy entrepreneur. I never had anyone ever take care of me.

‘Over the years I lost myself being married. My marriage influenced how I walked, how I dressed, how I talked, how big my boobs were. I just became the bobblehead wife. I could never be the smart, intelligent entrepreneur. I was always going to be the arm candy billionaire’s wife. I could not stand it.’

Meanwhile, Erika broke down in tears over her estranged husband Tom Girardi’s failing health in a recent episode of the Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills where she revealed he’s losing his sight and his hearing.

The Pretty Mess songstress, 50, opened up to castmate Kyle Richards in the clip, telling the actress she hasn’t spoken to the ailing lawyer, 82, since they split in November 2020.

‘One of the reasons I filed for divorce is the resistance to anything,’ she said, explaining how he became agitated when she pointed out how his eyes and ears were starting to give out.

Lots of loss: Erika, 50, was emotional as she told her Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills castmate Kyle Richards that estranged husband Tom Girardi, 82, is suffering from serious hearing and vision loss

The episode aired after Girardi was officially placed under a conservatorship because of his dementia diagnosis.

‘I hope someone is talking to Tom because he’s not good,’ Erika told Kyle during a hike.

‘Tom is a proud man,’ she went on before telling Richards how his ‘resistance’ to things influenced her decision to leave the attorney, who is currently under investigation amid accusations he ‘misappropriated at least $2 million’ meant for the families of those killed in the Lion Air Flight 610 crash in Indonesia.

‘One of the reasons I filed for divorce is the resistance to anything,’ she said. ‘The resistance to a conversation, the resistance to, “Hey, you know, I noticed that you can’t see well.”‘

Speaking from Tom’s perspective, she growled: “What are you talking about, I’m fine!”

‘No, you can’t see well. You can’t hear. You’re f**king degrading in front of me and you’re ignoring it,’ she remembered.

Tears: ‘You’re f**king degrading in front of me and you’re ignoring it,’ she remembered of Tom’s stubbornness to admit he’s failing health

Talking about her own emotions, Jayne admitted she’s felt alienated since the breakup and criminal accusations swirling around her ex.

‘It’s lonely and it’s quiet, and you would be shocked how quickly people turn on you, how quickly people distance themselves from you,’ Erika told Kyle.

‘Automatically they turn because they don’t want to be involved. But they were there when it was good, though.’

She was even more candid in a confessional, saying: ‘Want to know who your friends are? Go broke.’

‘Want to know who your friends are? Go to jail. Want to know who your friends are? Ask them to help you bury a body, I don’t know. You’ll find out who’s there for you.

Erika’s admission about Tom’s declining health comes just a day after his younger brother was officially made conservator of his person and estate.

A court in Los Angeles agreed the move due to Girardi’s dementia diagnosis, which is classified as a ‘major neurocognitive disorder’, People reported Tuesday.

Robert made the legal filing on Monday, the outlet said, after a June 9 court hearing in which he was appointed as Girardi’s permanent conservator.

Girardi is at the center of a high-profile investigation into fraud and embezzlement related to his legal work.

Jayne, who’s been accused of benefiting from funds meant for her husband’s clients, recently shot down claims that her divorce filing was a ‘sham’ to protect assets.

In December 2020, a federal judge in Chicago froze Girardi’s assets, saying the well-known Los Angeles lawyer had ‘misappropriated at least $2 million’ meant for the families of those killed in the Lion Air Flight 610 crash in Indonesia.

In March, the LA Times reported that there had been more than 100 lawsuits filed and multiple complaints made to the California State Bar against Girardi by disgruntled clients who alleged financial wrongdoing and theft.

Jayne has been ‘ordered to turn over financial records’ from her accountant, lawyer and landlord as part of the embezzlement investigation and a bankruptcy trustee is documenting the couple’s assets.

It’s been alleged that the split provided a way for the couple to embezzle funds and that Jayne had received ‘tens of millions of dollars’ from her husband’s firm to fund her projects, UsWeekly reported in June.

Girardi’s lawyers claimed earlier this year that he had ‘issues’ with ‘mental competence’ and it was subsequently disclosed that he had been diagnosed with dementia and late-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
