Rio Ferdinand is backing Mauricio Pochettino to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager – but has warned it is unlikely he will leave in the middle of the season.

.

Mirror Sport understands that the Paris Saint-Germain is open to returning to the Premier League, despite being just four months into his first full season in charge.

United are on the lookout for a new manager following the decision to dismiss Solskjaer following Saturday’s 4-1 thrashing by Watford.

Old Trafford officials were initially planning to hire an interim boss as a bridge to next summer, where they will make a concerted effort to land Pochettino.

But it is understood United chiefs have been encouraged by the Argentine’s belief and there is now a growing feeling he could depart the French capital imminently.

However, Red Devils legend Ferdinand believes it is unlikely he will walk out on Lionel Messi and co. until the end of the current campaign.

“I don't think that Pochettino leaves PSG during the season,” he said on his Vibe with FIVE YouTube channel . “He's a man of integrity, he's a man of respect.

“I think he's grateful for the opportunity to be at PSG and as a man, I think he'll just say: ‘If they want me that bad they'll wait’.

“I think from the media that we saw over the last couple of years when he was out of work, that for him Man United is the pinnacle, is the club he'd love to get to, get his hands on and guide the club.

“He's got a lot of stuff going on at PSG so you have to be respectful in that sense.

“It's about what PSG want as well because they're not the kind of club that will just relinquish their manager.

“I'm putting money on Pochettino, for the end of the season, start of next season, my money's on Pochettino being manager.”

A host of names have been linked with the interim role, including Laurent Blanc and even Steve Bruce, but Ferdinand thinks Sir Alex Ferguson’s old assistant Carlos Queiroz would jump at the chance of returning to the club.

“What about Carlos Quieroz?” Ferdinand asked. “'I think if Man United come calling for someone like Carlos Quieroz he drops whatever he's doing.”

The Portuguese coach had two stints working with Ferguson and was part of a setup which won three Premier League titles and a Champions League crown.

Queiroz is currently in charge of the Egyptian national team who are one of the favourites to win the African Cup of Nations which is set to kick-off in January.

He has previously been very critical of the post-Ferguson United, claiming that they had moved too far away from the methods which brought so much success during his time at the club.

“I think they made some critical and crucial mistakes in the transition from Alex,” he told the Guardian in 2015. “It was always about creating players. Now it is the opposite.

“There is panic buying. You have to prepare and then make the decisions together. You can still make wrong decisions but we never made panic decisions when buying players.”
