Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to Jose Mourinho as the Roma boss became the latest member of an elite group of managers.


Mourinho, 58, will take charge of his 1000th game as Roma host Sassuolo in Serie A on Sunday night.

His glittering CV includes two Champions League triumphs and domestic titles in his native Portugal, England, Italy and Spain, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches of all time.

Manchester United legend Ferguson certainly agrees with this view and hailed Mourinho as he was inducted into the League Manager Association's (LMA's) Hall of Fame 1000 club.

"Reaching 1000 matches as a manager will be such a proud day for both Jose and his family and rightly so," the Scot told the LMA website.

"To reach this landmark as a manager is an outstanding accomplishment for Jose, particularly whilst excelling and winning titles in four European leagues and of course winning two Champions League trophies along the way.

"Jose's achievements will always ensure that he is acknowledged as one of the managerial greats. On behalf of the League Managers Association, congratulations and welcome to the Hall of Fame 1000 Club, Jose."

Mourinho burst onto the scene with Porto, winning five major honours in two seasons before taking charge of Chelsea in 2004.

He led the Blues to back-to-back Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup, and his side conceded a record-low 15 goals in their triumphant 2004/05 campaign.

Mourinho would go on to win four trophies with Inter Milan including a continental treble in 2010 before adding to his vast trophy cabinet during spells with Real Madrid and Manchester United, which sandwiched a successful second stint at Chelsea.

Mourinho managed Tottenham for 17 months before he was sacked in April, days before he was due to lead the club in the Carabao Cup final in a bid to end their 13-year wait for a trophy.

He was quickly snapped up by Roma and has led the club to back-to-back wins in Serie A, with his side scoring seven goals and conceding once so far.

Reflecting on his latest achievement, Mourinho said: "I am obviously very pleased to be reaching the milestone of 1000 matches managed this weekend, but at the same time it is always in my nature to be looking forward to the next match instead of dwelling on those precious matches that I have experienced so far in my career.

"To be inducted into the League Managers Association 1000 Club is an achievement that I am proud of and I thank the LMA for remembering this milestone and the many matches my teams have won during this time."
