The Wanted reveal they are ‘super proud’ of bandmate Tom Parker during his cancer battle

The Wanted have said they are ‘super proud’ of their bandmate Tom Parker during his ongoing brain cancer battle.

The group, made up of Tom, Max George, Jay McGuinness, Siva Kaneswaran and Nathan Sykes, took part in a photoshoot for FAULT magazine and admitted they wished they could have reunited under ‘different circumstances’.

Max said: ‘We just wish that we were here under different circumstances because Tom’s obviously going through what he is and none of us wants that for someone so close to our heart. We’re super proud of him.’

The group also praised JLS for paving the way for them when they first formed in 2009.

Jay said: ‘I think something that we don’t recognise enough is how JLS came out a year before us from The X factor and no one expected a boy band to ever come back.

‘I think labels saw that and thought “let’s take that and put a bunch of white guys in there to see what happens.”‘

The quintet told how they struggled to balance their personal lives with their work commitments during the height of their boyband fame, something they hope to change now they have reunited.

Tom said: ‘Time management was a hurdle because the label wanted us to do everything that we could, whereas, for us, time for ourselves is important.

‘We didn’t give ourselves enough time to do our personal endeavours – that’s one thing that we hopefully can learn from the last time that we can take into this new era.’

Jay added: ‘I think we were constantly chasing success that we never realized that we already had it.

‘We got out a number one as our first single but every time we didn’t get a number one after that, we’d quietly beat ourselves up about it.’

It comes after Tom broke down as he opened up about his terminal brain tumour during his emotional Channel 4 documentary, Inside My Head, which aired on Sunday night.

And on Monday morning, Tom admitted he was ‘proud watching it’ as he spoke to fans on his Instagram Stories while snuggling up to his family, and looked to the future amid his cancer battle.

The Wanted star’s wife Kelsey admitted that she was in tears while watching the programme and vowed to ‘be his strength always’ as the couple thanked fans for their support.

Speaking to the camera, Tom said: ‘Hi all. It’s the morning after the documentary. We just want to say a massive thank you for tuning in.

‘Yeah, it was an emotional watch. But I watched it. I didn’t know whether I was going to or not but I did it. I was proud of watching it.’

Kelsey agreed that it had been emotional, adding: ‘Yeah look my eyes are still puffy! Thank you for all your love, your messages and support. I was going to get back to you all. You’ve been amazing.’

Tom added: ‘Yes you have. Here’s to the future… and getting better!’

Immediately after the documentary aired, Kelsey took to her Instagram Stories where she posted a photograph of herself and Tom with their hands clasped together.

Career: The Wanted formed in 2009 and went their separate ways five years later

With The Wanted’s song I’ll Be Your Strength playing over the image, she wrote: ‘I’ll be your strength always.’

The couple wed in 2018 and share two-year-old Aurelia Rose and 12-month-old son Bodhi, who were both seen in Tom’s latest Instagram video.

During the Inside My Head documentary, Tom – who was diagnosed with brain cancer last year – broke down in tears as he spoke frankly about his terminal brain tumour.

The singer also revealed he has suffered from short-term memory loss, spent nearly three months in bed solidly, and looked at his cancer treatment plan.

Success: Their debut single All Time Low went straight to the top of the UK charts in 2009

Music: They scored their second UK number one with Glad You Came in 2012

Growing emotional as he spoke about his prognosis, Tom said: ‘It’s so hard to think about the future, I don’t want to know.

‘I don’t think you know how you feel about death until you’re faced with it. Am I going to die? That’s the most important question… I want to stick around – and be the best version I can!’

The documentary also saw Tom reunite with The Wanted for a Stand Up To Cancer performance.

Yet it was touch and go as to whether he’d be able to perform with his bandmates due to his condition.

Looking ahead: Tom admitted he was ‘proud watching it’ as he spoke to fans on his Instagram Stories while snuggling up to his family, and looked to the future amid his cancer battle

Tom was diagnosed with glioblastoma last year, which is inoperable, and has undergone radiotherapy.

In the show, he learnt that the tumour had shrunk – but was left unsure of what the future holds for him.

He said: ‘I don’t want people to treat me different just because I’ve got something, I think that was always on my mind.

‘I do feel like I’m in a much stronger place, but it’s so hard to think about the future. Do you know what I mean? I genuinely don’t know what it holds anymore.’

What is Glioblastoma?

Glioblastoma is an aggressive type of cancer that can occur in the brain or spinal cord.

It forms from cells called astrocytes that support nerve cells.

Glioblastoma can occur at any age, but tends to occur more often in older adults.

It can cause worsening headaches, nausea, vomiting and seizures.

Glioblastoma, also known as glioblastoma multiforme, can be very difficult to treat and a cure is often not possible.

Treatments may slow progression of the cancer and reduce signs and symptoms.
