Confusion last night surrounded which police force is investigating the embarrassing pictures of Wayne Rooney with semi-naked girls.

The Greater Manchester force denied they were looking into the snaps, 24 hours after the Derby manager’s representatives said the matter had been reported to them over fears of criminal conduct.

They said officers were probing Rooney’s complaint he feared a sting.

But GMP insisted today: “We are not aware that this has been reported to police. There is no police involvement at this time.”

Tonight a spokesman for the Liverpool firm of solicitors who issued a warning about using pictures of Wayne Rooney with the young women in a Manchester hotel room said: “I personally informed Greater Manchester Police.

"I am told the matter has been referred to Cheshire Police.”

The Cheshire force had not responded to the Mirror late tonight.

And Derby County said: “Wayne Rooney informed the club today that the pictures had emerged and that they had been taken without his knowledge or approval.

“After taking counsel the matter was reported to Greater Manchester Police who are currently investigating the incident.

"While that remains the case, there will be no further comment.”

Dad-of-four Rooney was snapped chatting to a girl in Chinawhite nightclub, Manchester.

He was later pictured holding a glass of wine in a hotel room then asleep on a chair as girls were hovering in their underwear around him, apparently playing pranks.

One flashed her bottom next to him, captioning it “Mooney Rooney”.

The hotel room pictures were shared online. There was no suggestion Rooney did anything untoward or behaved inappropriately.

The 35-year-old former Manchester United and England striker was in Manchester after Derby lost 2-1 away in a pre-season friendly to Salford on Saturday.

He was pictured for the fist time since the snaps today at his team’s training ground.

At one point, he took an animated call on his mobile phone.

He was later seen leaving the ground in a blacked-out SUV which drove him to pick up his own car from where it had been left.

None of the women involved, Tayler Ryan, Elise Melvin and Brooke Morgan, all 21, were available for comment today.

Tayler is a bikini and swimwear model with her own YouTube channel.

She is believed to be staying at her mum Angela Saunderson’s semi-detached house in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

The 44-year-old said today: “She is not talking.”

Tayler’s dad, builder Pat Ryan, 43, wrote in a Facebook post that his daughter was “a good girl” and had been trying to call him on the night to tell him she had met Rooney.

The post has since been deleted.
